3d editorial illustration for article on internet piracy and copyright article

This is my latest editorial illustration for Dragonbat (my illustrator/Guardian reader rants and sketches blog). I’m writing an article about copyright on the internet, and as usual I wanted a cool illustration to accompany it. The article itself isn’t finished yet – pressures of actual work that brings me real cash money, rather than [...]

Clouds are not so easy in Blender 3D, but I’m making progress

Learning the 3D animation process is beset with enormous obstacles, and the latest I’ve encountered is putting clouds in the background of an animation, and getting them to render in a way that looks even a little bit like clouds. The Noob to Pro resource is the best source of help I found Blender 3D: [...]

Speeding Up My Animation | Blender Underground’s Video Tutorials

The titles of my animation were moving a little slowly, see last post, they should jiggle, not sway. I’ve noticed that the graphics in a lot of cool edgy stuff jiggles about as though it is on an old-fashioned reel of film going through a badly adjusted movie projector. I can’t actually think of [...]

Dark Cat 3D Mesh

I think this 3D model that I am currently working on in Blender (the free 3D software solution) is really going to be something special. In my last post I mentioned how I’m keen on putting some of my 3D images on the front of t-shirts and I think Dark Cat here will be perfect [...]

QuickTime mov animations with audio from Blender, how hard can that be?

My animation was starting to take shape. I had a cat – admittedly a cat that looked like some kind of evil robot sock puppet (but I’m going to work on it) – and the cat moved, so now all I had to do was add a little music and a few sound effects [...]

Blender sculpt mode is easy and super cool

This Blender 3D tutorial has really helped me with my latest problem. The problem was that no matter what I did the body of the 3D cat mesh that I’ve been working on refused to look like anything other than a piece of hexagonal metal. I desperately needed to smooth it but I didn’t [...]

3D Witch Cat animation prep going nicely

I need a background for my 3D witch’s cat animation and I’ve decided that the easiest way to go is simply to sketch one, scan it in and colour in the resulting image with Photoshop. Then all I’ll need to do is finish the cat mesh, a mouse mesh and possibly a mousetrap mesh as [...]

I got Blender working (yippee). Now I have three free 3D engines sitting on my desktop.

My new free 3D graphics suite, Blender (it’s free), seems to have an even steeper learning curve than trueSpace, and the interface looks much more sparse and austere, professional I guess. But these 3D content creation packages are perfect for producing illustrations for science fiction role-playing games, and so it’s worth the effort.
I mentioned [...]

My 3D robot illustration for Traveller is starting to look good

After a couple of hours more work on my 3D droid illustration for my science fiction role-playing game setting, for Traveller, I think I’ve made a breakthrough. The image of the robot is starting to look more like a finished illustration, and less like a work in progress.
I have used Photoshop to put a filter [...]
