Beginnings of a Witch’s Cat and Another Mech Obsessive’s Blog

By The Illustrator

moon_catI took the head of my latest work-in-progress RPG mech and I’m using it to create a cat for a cute animation. The cat is still looking very robotic – even after hours of work – so I’ve placed it against a strange moon like irradiated background for now.

Though perhaps a robot moon cat is a little out there, even for me and my crazy RPG related illustration ideas. But it’ll be nice when it is done and it’s part of a cute animation done entirely in Blender. That could take years, of course; even learning how to paint the mesh took a few hours of research through the online manuals and turned out to be far from child’s play.

But despite all this messing about with meshes in Blender and reading all the way to the end of Peter F Hamilton’s latest 500 page sci-fi goliath, I have still found time to indulge my obsession with mech based RPGs.

The set of RPG Mech rules this guy (unfairly I’m assuming it’s a guy) is writing sound perversely good for example.

But as they are still in the testing phase, my quest for the ultimate set of mech rules goes on. There are lost souls hanging around in forums who seem to share my concerns for a rules light system that retains tactical options and some RPG playability. I’m doodling so many mechs at the moment that I just can’t be spending an hour (or even more) for each mech to come up with game stats for it. I need something quick and dirty.

Dirt Side II seemed to fit the bill and was actually looking quite good, and the rules sure are simple but after my first skim through it, it just hasn’t grabbed me yet. I think it’s too much like a war game and not enough like an RPG for me. These rules on the other hand are a little too simple even for me. After more forum searching I toying with the idea of maybe sticking with D20 Mecha.
