3D images and designs
3D illustration is one of
the most phenomenal growth areas in art right now, and with great free
software like Blender it is within the reach of more
talented individuals than ever. For an illustrator like me, this is
actually quite a frightening thought, but I guess we have to hope that
the more talent
comes into the market, the bigger and more interesting and attractive
the market will get, constantly growing so that nobody is ever pushed
out.
My opinion is that the demand for high-quality 3D illustrations is
bottomless. From cute characters, to realistic product design and
experimental work
at the boundaries of what is possible, there are new avenues for this
wonderful new advance in human creativity opening up every day, perhaps
even every hour.
From the way I have been talking you might have guessed that we are
very excited indeed about 3D illustrations here at Starbright and now
that we
have Blender up and running on our machine we are going back to the
sketchbook, canvass and Photoshop less and less often. A selection of
the
best 3D work we have produced so far is below but we also post the
latest renders from our ongoing sculpts at the blog.
In the past my non-spaceship 3D work has mostly been confined to
robots, but I recently made such a beautiful velvety-textured cat image
in
Blender, from a relatively simple mesh, that I intend to do more cute
characters, animals, monsters and urban vinyl type stuff. I have a lot
of ideas
and the new cuter, but just as much 3D mesh based and just as
accomplished, figures should start to replace a few of the droids
pretty soon.
Of course that doesn't mean that I will be abandoning my droids
altogether, and in fact I have recently been on photo safari looking
for futuristic
areas of my city for a giant mechanoid creature to destroy using the
magic of Blender's 3D modeling abilities and, of course, Photoshop. It
should
make for an interesting image, having this beast bite a big chunk out
of a building and start munching on the rubble will be the first thing
I do once I
have the mesh all worked out and I've selected a background photo.
